Dick Turpin [Dick Turpin]
(1706–39) a famous English ↑highwayman (= a criminal who robbed travellers in former times). He was captured and hanged in York, possibly for murder or for stealing horses. After his death many romantic stories were told about him, especially one about his ride from London to York on his horse Black Bess.
